My Mission in Coaching

Updated: Feb 25, 2023

My mission with Heart.Mind.Body.Pedal Coaching is to cast a perspective on life from the experiences of riding a bicycle. From a young age cycling or biking has gifted me with many lessons and mindset shifts. These lessons and shifts have shaped the way I view myself and my world. I feel that it is my mission and passion to share these ideas with you and the world. These ideas from cycling are: the personal control and independence I have, perspective and flow have I gained while riding, personal reward of achieving what I set out to achieve, discipline of myself and what I do, the creativity I can exercise on my ride and in life, that I have choice, and the joy in all of it, the joy in the triumphs and the downfalls. This list and the depth of each of these continue to grow daily. I am so excited to share this ride with you!

  • Personal control and Independence - In relation to transportation, a bike can be a persons first taste of independence. With this independence our world expands and where we can take ourselves grows exponentially. This physical independence offers a shift in our internal perspective of our selves and our world. We are now more capable and have a new freedom to exercise, and of what our possibilities are.

  • Perspective - The perspective in which we see the world is shaped by our beliefs and experiences we have in life. The beliefs you have may have been taught to you by someone else. We may not have even been aware of and our experiences may also be colored by those beliefs or our state at that time. Cycling has challenged my beliefs and the perspective I have in that moment. Many of the shifts I experienced were anchored around whether or not I could do something or the way to do it (creativity). Conquering a challenge always aids us in the expansion of how we see the world.

  • Flow - Flow is a newer concept in the scientific world, or at least in definition. This state of mind heightens and accelerates a persons perception of the moment at hand. In this state our entire world view can be challenged. Our skill acquisition increases both in speed and fullness. When I have been riding, my line choice and speed at which I am able to control the bike has increased immensely. This state is highly correlated with extreme sports athletes and their ability to push the envelope! Steven Kotler has written a few books on the topic, great reads.

  • Personal Reward - This lesson was a big realization for me. For a long time much of my self worth was based around the rewards or attention I received from others. Over time while riding the personal reward and excitement I garnered from myself really took me to another level. I was no long waiting for others feedback or permissions. I was then able to move faster and excel quicker. I was my own support and feedback. The feedback was productive and immediate, so the actions I took that were more aligned with where I wanted to go and my goal.

  • Discipline - Discipline came as a product of love for the sport and the love of the self I found in those moment of flow on my bike. So often in society today discipline has been shadowed in a bad light and is associated with negativity and hard work. I believe in the right environment, discipline can be welcomed or even a by product of love and acceptance. I discovered discipline as a by product when I was riding park and learning tricks. Getting myself to the skate park, to continue the struggle of nailing a trick became easy and exciting! Passion and self admiration can precede effortless discipline.

  • Creativity - Creativity can be utilized in so many ways. Often it is associated with art or artistry but through biking and other endeavors I have had it as a means of looking at something in a new way or light to give way to a new path. In the different style of biking, creativity has served me well, with finding new lines, new tricks and just a more vibrant way of looking at life!

  • Choice - Having more independence, highlighted that with that independence, came more choices. There is a sense of personal power when you have choice. A choice on how hard to push, what trail to ride and so much more. That power adds to your sense of worth and just the security in being your won person.

  • Joy - Joy goes beyond happiness. Joy is a positive sense of well being even when things may be rough or not going your way. Finding this tool is an incredible asset to overcome obstacles in everyday life. I have fond so much joy for myself in the suffering i can endure on a ride I choose, in the hard a sometimes grueling work it takes to achieve a goal that will give you complete fulfillment! This joy is entangled with hope as well.

Seeking with in myself and how I choose to experience life has allowed me to create a very powerful collection of tools that I can pull out and use when they are needed! These ideas are what I coach from and though this list is constantly growing and shifting the basis or principles of them hold solid.
